The nose and nasal passages play a prominent role as a filter on the human body, hence the importance of taking care of it! A true filter for our lungs, is the nose. The nose functions by moistening and warming the air, around us. All “filters” must be clean to be effective! It helps us to breathe and brings oxygen into our body. Nasal hygiene must be a priority in our health routine!

At this time of year, many Canadians suffer from allergic rhinitis: inflammation (periodic or not) of the lining of the nose and sinuses, caused by many allergens. Allergies can have various causes: grass and tree pollens, molds and mites are common allergens in summer. As much in children as in adults.

Clogged nose or runny nose, itching or sneezing … Allergy symptoms that may affect your well-being and your quality of life. Good nasal hygiene reduces allergic symptoms by eliminating the presence of allergens in the mucous membranes of the nose.

For the health of your nose and your airways, Homeocan has  5 ways to help:

Moisten the air in your home

Nasal hygiene starts with living in a healthy environment and breathing clean air. The temperature of your house should be at 19 ° – 20 ° and the ideal moisture content should be between 30 to 50%.

  • If the humidity is less than 30%, buy an air humidifier by adding fresh water every day.
  • If the humidity is more than 55%, buy a dehumidifier, cleaning the unit every week to avoid mold.

Regularly clean

Blowing your nose is a good way to keep the airways open and clean.

To prevent the accumulation of dust on objects and carpets, it is recommended to clean at least once a week. Vacuum furniture and floor without forgetting underbeds and closets.

Eliminating dust will help you reduce the allergons in your environment and thus preserve the health of your nose.

Tip: Use nontoxic household products and avoid those with strong odors as they can be irritating to the respiratory tract.

Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke

  • Stop smoking: everyone knows, tobacco is bad for your health! It irritates the nose, throat and lungs … Even low exposure can have serious consequences.

  • Avoid second-hand smoke: For example, wood-burning heating promotes drier air and is not recommended. Also, wood smoke contains toxic substances and fine particles that can have a harmful effect on your  health..

Check the filters of your car

In the summer we often take road trips in order to spend more time outdoors, and with the cars airconditioning we have dust and other allergens going through the air filter, so always folllow the car manufacting guidelines and change the air filter accordingly.

This is why the engine air conditioner filters must be changed or cleaned regularly (as recommended by the manufacturer).

Clean your nose daily

Regularly cleaning your nose helps to ease congestion and the presence of bacteria. Nasal hygiene is usually done with saline solution (home-made or pharmacy) to clean the nasal cavity and eliminate impurities.

Finally, to help you relieve the symptoms of seasonal allergies, Homeocan offers a selection of natural and homeopathic products to find here!
